The Arma City Council voted unanimously at its Monday meeting to return a $50 deposit paid by a senior citizen group for use of the bathrooms in Arma City Park during a picnic Sunday afternoon.

Despite having paid the deposit, the restrooms remained closed to the group for the duration of the picnic, Arma resident Nadine Jones told the council.

“When you have that many elderly people together in the park, you need to have restrooms,” Jones said.

The city requires a deposit for use of the restrooms as a safeguard against vandalism and abuse.

“They get pretty torn up,” City Administrator Troy Graham said.

Council member Buddy Bualle apologized on behalf of the city.

“We all know the reason for the deposit, but that’s not an excuse to not have them open for you,” Bualle said.

Council member Johnnie Logiudici agreed.

“Elderly or not, they should have been open,” he said.

Jones also asked whether the city could removed several piles of dried-out brush from the properties of several of her neighbors. The neighbors weren’t saving the brush for any specific reason, Jones said, and the careless flick of a cigarette or match could ignite them. Graham said removing the piles would not be a a problem.

“Just call us and we can come pick it up,” he said.

Also Monday, the council voted unanimously to approve the purchase of five inch fire hose from Danko Emergency Equipment for the Arma Fire Department/Crawford County Fire District No. 2’s new fire truck. The old truck had only been able to support the use of two and a half in hose, which could not deliver water in adequate amounts, fire chief Mike McLeod said.

McLeod said he had made sure there was money in the department’s budget to purchase the hose.

“And we’ve made purchases with them before,” McLeod said.

Danko’s bid of $2,800.11 beat two other bids for $2,865 and $3,120.
