St. Mary's Colgan shortstop-pitcher Sam Gilbert earned a selection to the 2012 Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches All-Star Game. Gilbert will be on the Purple squad, one of four color-coded all-star squads (Red, Blue, White and Purple) that will play a doubleheader Wednesday on the campus of Kansas State University.

Gilbert was not the only player from the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League picked for the game: Tyler Morrill of Riverton joins Gilbert on the Purple and Baxter Springs standout Austin Karnes will play on the Blue.

Hunter Seibert of Labette County gives the Southeast Kansas League representation on the Blue.

The KABC All-Star Game puts together large-school and small-school standouts on the same team.

For example, the Red team features two players from Class 6A Lawrence (Garrett Cleavinger, C.J. Roush) and three players from Class 2-1A Sedan (Trae Smith, Shon Pinard and Sam Powell). From enrollment figures dated Sept. 20, 2011, Lawrence had 1,525 students and Sedan 107. Now, all five players are on the same All-Star team.

The Red and the Blue play at 1:30 p.m. with the Purple and the White scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Cox Channel 22 will televise the Red and Blue game from Tointon Family Stadium, host site of the Class 3A state tournament.
