Pittsburg State University is pleased to announce its 25th Anniversary induction class into the Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. The seven-person group — comprised of six men and one woman — will be formally inducted during ceremonies on campus on Saturday, Sept. 8.
PSU's Class of 2012 is headlined by a six-time All-America and national champion shot putter Ryan Keith, who competed in track & field for the Gorillas from 1993-96, as well as three-time All-America linebacker Wes Baker, who competed in football for the Gorillas from 1997-2000.
All-America linebacker B.J. McGivern (1992-95) and six-time All-America Maria (Guerrero) Murrison (1993-94) also join the Hall of Fame, representing the sports of football and women's track & field.
PSU volunteer assistant football coach Larry Garman, one of the most decorated high school football coaches in Kansas state history during his tenure at Pittsburg High School (1965-98), also has been tabbed for the Hall of Fame as a meritorious achievement inductee.
Additionally, Homer Cole, who served his country in WWII then competed for legendary coach John Lance in men’s basketball from 1946-50 and went on to later serve the city of Pittsburg as mayor, and Harry McDonald, who played football for the Gorillas from 1937-40 and later enjoyed a decorated coaching career at Arma High School, both will be inducted in the Hall of Fame’s “Legacy” category as meritorious achievement honorees.
The Legacy category, created in 2005, focuses solely on individuals from the school's first 50 years (1903-53) in an attempt to bolster the school's rich heritage from its first half-century.
“Hall of Fame groups always are special, but this is even more true for the Class of 2012 as it represents the 25th anniversary of the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame,” said Dan Wilkes, associate athletic director for marketing & communications as well as chair of the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame selection committee. “This group features four very accomplished athletes from the 1990s as well as three men who have made profound impacts over sustained periods of time in Pittsburg and southeast Kansas in each of their own unique ways. Most importantly, all seven of these individuals are Gorillas who deserve to proudly represent their alma mater in this elite way.”
