Fifteen Girard Middle School students and six Haderlein Elementary students were selected to perform in District Honor Band and Choir at Chanute Jan. 12.

To participate in the groups, eighth grade students expressed interest in auditioning to director Willey Abati, who then filled out a written audition for each student.

Middle school choir students auditioned for Mr. Abati, who is allotted a given number of students to send to each honor choir.

Elementary music instructor John Womeldorff selected fifth grade students in the same manner.

Rehearsals began for all groups at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. During rehearsals, students had the opportunity to work under different direction with other talented musicians from the area.

Regarding rehearsal, eighth grader Cailie Logue said, “The band director made sure each section played to the best of their ability, and when we put it all together, it sounded really good.”

“The most fun was being able to sing all day,” seventh grader Mary Zimmerman said.

Students then performed in a concert at 3:30 p.m. before returning home.

Students selected for District Honor Band include Heidi Burns, Caylee Egbert, Cailie Logue, Sydney Gottlob and Madison Trageser.

Those chosen for the 7/8th grade Honor Choir include Lauren Battitori, Michaela Schettler, Mary Kate Smith, Grant Waterman and Mary Zimmerman.

Elementary choir members selected include Hannah Blevins, McKenin Blythe, Mackenzie Coester, Josh Duling, Jordanne Ferguson, A. J. Howell, Emma Kerr, Macy Reif, Noah Sandford, Kelsie Staten and Landon Windsor.

Regarding the elementary Honor Choir, Mr. Womeldorff said, “The SE District Elementary Honor Choir is a great opportunity for our students to experience higher level music and meet new friends. I am gratified that Girard students compare favorably with students throughout the region.”
