The Pittsburg State University Provost, Provost’s Leadership Council and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics have partnered to create an academic recognition program, the Provost’s Award for Academic Excellence, to recognize student-athletes for their academic achievements at the conclusion of each fall semester.

The award recognizes student-athletes who have completed 30 semester credit hours toward their degree program during the previous spring, summer and fall semesters and have a cumulative PSU grade-point-average of 3.5 or better.

A total of 46 PSU student-athletes will be honored in the inaugural for attaining the Provost’s Award for Academic Excellence for 2012. The individuals will be recognized during halftime activities of Pitt State’s basketball doubleheader against Northeastern State University on Feb. 16.

“We are excited to establish a unique program to recognize the academic achievements of our student-athletes at Pittsburg State University,” Lynette Olson, PSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, said. “This program was created not only to recognize outstanding achievements but also to motivate student-athletes to perform at a level that is ‘above average’ while also participating in an intercollegiate sport.”

Eligibility for the award is limited to those student-athletes who have completed two or more regular semesters at PSU. Transfer students and new freshmen who initially enroll in the fall are not eligible until they complete three regular semesters.

Following the on-court recognition ceremony on Feb. 16, Olson will host a recognition dinner for all award winners and their parents as well as the student-athletes academic advisors and the dean of their respective colleges.

“We are thankful to Dr. Olson and the PSU administration for their roles in helping tell the stories of our outstanding student-athletes beyond the scope of their competitive achievements,” PSU athletic director Jim Johnson said. “The creation of the Provost’s Award For Academic Excellence will hopefully not only call to light a large group of very talented young men and women but also inspire current and future Gorilla student-athletes to work hard in the classroom to attain this recognition.”
