PSU poetry reading
More than 16 poets from across Kansas will come together at 8 p.m. in room 409, Russ Hall, Pittsburg State University, to read from the poetry collection “To the Stars Through Difficulties: A Kansas Renga in 150 Voices.”
A renga is a collaborative poem in which each new poet adds lines to the poem. “To the Stars Through Difficulties” was done in observance of the state’s 150th anniversary, and contributors include all poets laureate of the state, professional writers and newcomers.
Among those participating in the PSU reading will be Kansas poet laureate Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, who edited the collection, as well as local authors Laura Lee Washburn, Lori Baker Martin, Roland Sodowsky, J.T. Knoll, Larry Fleury, A. Lorean Hartness, Jeremy Johnson, Allison Berry, Melissa Fite Johnson, Stephen E. Meats, Chris Anderson and Olive Sullivan, as well as Lydia Lowe, Lorraine Achey and Ken Lassman.
The free public reading is sponsored by the PSU Distinguished Visiting Writers Series, PSU English department and the PSU Student Fee Council.
Senior exercise
Homer Cole Community Center, 3003 N. Joplin, will offer a free senior exercise class at 8:30 a.m.
Sponsored by Girard Medical Center, the session offers simple movements and stretching to help with upper and lower body strength, cardiovascular and overall health. Anyone needing additional information may call the center at 231-9773.
Spaghetti dinner
A spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church, East 20th and Elm.
Price will be $6 for adults and $3 for children under 3. Carry-outs will be available. Those attending should enter the church by the south door.
Among the silent auction items will be four Kansas City Royals tickets, upper deck infield for any game but the opening; gift cards from Auto Zone, Applebee’s, Walmart, El Charro, Dillons in Pittsburg, Rockin K and Buddy’s Home Furnishings; Pittsburg State University T-shirts; and various merchandise donated by local merchants.
Kiwanis Club
Pittsburg Kiwanis Club will meet at noon in dePaul Hall, Via Christi Hospital. Program will be presented by Ken Thompson and Michael Brennecke of the Department for Children and Families.
Helen Kriegsman will be cashier and Larry Weaver will serve as greeter. Tim Metcalf will give the invocation.
Cherokee dinner
CHEROKEE — Cherokee United Methodist Church will have a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m.
Menu will include spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, bread and dessert. Cost will be $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

FORT SCOTT — Fort Scott Scottish Rite will have a stated dinner and meeting at the Fort Scott Scottish Rite Temple.

TOPS KS 1120 Pittsburg will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Pittsburg Public Library.
Mission of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is to support members as they take off and keep off pounds sensibly. The organization offers an Exchange program with no special foods to buy and weekly private weigh-in. Annual membership is $28 for adults 18 and older.
