The St. Paul Indians swept the Oswego Indians in a Three Rivers League doubleheader Tuesday night.
The St. Paul boys won 70-60 behind a balanced offensive attack and a 20-6 edge in made free throws.
Jake O’Brien reached double-digits in several categories: a game-high 30 points, 15 rebounds, 10 field goals, 10 free throws and 12 free throws attempted. His point totals by quarter: nine, six, 12 and three.
Only five St. Paul players reached but three hit double figures and each one scored at least seven points: in addition to the 30 of Jake O’Brien, Austin O’Brien added 14, Paul Schibi 13, Anthony Diskin eight and Brayden Beachner seven. Austin O’Brien netted eight free throws.
St. Paul remained undefeated in TRL play (7-0) and improved to 13-5 overall.
Oswego received 22 points from Brant Yeoman, 13 from Kel Yeoman and 10 from Travis Schenker.
The O’Briens outpointed the Yeomans 44-35.
St. Paul won the girls contest 50-32 behind 12 points from Josie Albertini, 11 from Kacy Phillips and 10 from Jordyn Tuck.
Outside shooting made a big difference — St. Paul made five 3s (two each by Albertini and Phillips, one by Tuck) and Oswego none, a 15-point edge alone.
Additionally, Oswego shot 8-17 (47 percent) on free throws.
St. Paul improved to 14-4, 6-1 TRL and Oswego dropped to 9-8, 5-2.
Middle school basketball
The Pittsburg Community Middle School boys hoops teams finished their season Tuesday night with games against Iola.
The seventh grade A team completed a 14-0 season with a 39-20 win over the Mustangs. PCMS won the SEK Tournament and defeated every SEK school.
Against the Mustangs, Chase Curtis led the way with 11 points and eight rebounds, Alex Kafka had eight points, three assists and three steals, and Jhalani Long grabbed six boards.
In the seventh grade B contest, PCMS won 30-12 to finish its season 11-2. Dalton Gromer and James Renfro both had six points and Reese Willis had five.
The eighth grade A team finished its season 8-8 with a 46-42 loss to Iola. Trevor Kent and Emmanuel Garcia led the scoring with eight points apiece. Nathan Woods grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and Colton Trejo added seven rebounds, two assists.
PCMS won the eighth grade B contest 39-20 to end its season 11-2. Deveron Duncan scored 16 points.
The four PCMS boys teams combined for an overall 45-12 record, part of a grand scheme of PCMS basketball success. No PCMS team — boys and girls — recorded a losing mark this season, finishing with a 93-19 combined record over 112 games
The boys (63) and the girls (53) totaled 116 players. The eighth grade girls finished their season 14-2.
