Fort Scott Community Christian Church sent a bouquet of carnations to Mary V. Shead while she was a patient recently at Fort Scott Mercy Hospital. Many of her friends visited her there and sent cards. Marcy Reynolds from Community Christian Church was one of her visitors, as was Kevin Moyers.
Pastor Charles Cable and Willa Cable of the Arcadia Christian Church attended the 40th annual celebration of Community Christian Church on Feb. 10. Leon Weece was guest speaker during the morning services. He was a pastor of the Arcadia Christian Church prior to being the first preacher at Community Christian Church.
Jenny Dugan, Fort Scott Mercy Hospital radiology technician, was pictured in the Fort Scott Tribune to emphasize the hospitals offer of free mammograms. She is the daughter of Wayne and Christi Parrish, Arcadia.
Arcadia High School Our Gang will have a dinner at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Arcadia Community Center. Menu will feature brisket, pulled pork and side dishes. Cost will be $7 or $8 per person. John and Judy Rawlings made the arrangements.
The Kalm family helped Nellie Kalm celebrate her 94th birthday and at the same time celebrated her and Hurl Kalm’s 77th wedding anniversary on Jan. 26. Mrs. Kalm was married at the age of 17. The family dinner was held at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village.
Arcadia Christian Church Class No. 10 met Jan. 22 with Carol Garrison, Betty Dehn, Patty Peterson and Cathy Allen present. Betty Dehn was hostess and served raspberry bars. Evelyn Bryant and Judy Rawlings were trying to come, but were delayed 30 minutes at Oskaloosa by a train, so they missed the meeting.
Nina Mary Terrill, Fort Scott, died Jan. 22, 2013, at the Fort Scott Manor. Her husband was Jessie Junior Terrill, a former Arcadia resident who died in 1987.
Troy, Angi and Peyton Whetzell spent Sunday with Tom and Yvonne Whetzell. They looked through old photos and reminisced. Ronnie and Virginia Smith, Pittsburg, and Patty Wright, Englevale, stopped by in the afternoon.
Matt and Breezie Castro, Fort Scott, have announced the birth of a daughter, Hayden Willow, Jan. 7, 2013, at Fort Scott Mercy Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Richard and Susan Glossip, Fulton. Paternal grandparents are Jerry and Rhonda Portwood, Mulberry. Paternal great-grandparents are Bill and Clarice Swezey, Mulberry.
Jack and Harriett Corporon, Brooklyn, N.Y., were in southeast Kansas Feb. 9 and visited his sister, Mary V. Shead. His nephew, Larry Shead, drove to Ottawa and picked them up to bring them back to the Garland farm home of Larry and Vickie Shead for dinner. The Corporons hosted a KFC dinner. Others present were Katy and Benjamin Shead, Fort Scott, and Charles Corporon and Rose Campbell, Pittsburg. Jack Corporon and his wife were in Kansas so that he could attend the meeting of the William Allen White Foundation at the University of Kansas. He is a board member of the foundation, which is dedicated to keeping alive the ideals of White, an internationally known journalist and owner and editor of the Emporia Gazette. White won a Pulitzer Prize for his middle-of-the-road advice to state and national political leaders.
