The Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce annually recognizes an outstanding small business, and the community has until March 1 to nominate potential candidates.

“We accept nominations from anyone,” said Devin Gorman, vice president of operations for the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

However, he said that there are some criteria that determine which businesses qualify.

“We want people who have been established in the community and have given back to the community,” Gorman said.

He said businesses also must have been chamber members for at least two years, employee no more than 50 people on a full-time basis and have been in business at least four years.

The award seeks to recognize small businesses in the Pittsburg area for outstanding contributions to the economy and overall progress in Crawford County.

Gorman said the same businesses may be nominated multiple times, but that a business that has won will not be selected again.

“We make sure that it gets spread around,” he said. “They can be finalists multiple times, but they can’t win again.”

Gorman said the nomination form can be found on the right side of the chamber’s Web page, www.pittsburgareachamber.com, under the news & events heading, and by clicking on the link labeled “small business of the year.”

Nomination forms can be mailed, faxed or e-mailed to the chamber office, and will be reviewed by a selection committee, which includes individuals from the chamber, the community and BKD.

“The finalists are actually brought in before the panel and interviewed,” Gorman said.

The three finalists will be announced and the winner will be named at the Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet on May 23.
