A fourth quarter comeback was not enough for the Frontenac Raiders to overcome the Fort Scott Tigers in the Class 4A substate championship game, losing 47-41.

Down by three, Libby Warrick hit her third outside shot of the night to tie the game at 41 with less than two minutes to play.

But the Raiders couldn’t contain Katren Rienbolt, who finished the night with 13 points total and was sent to the free throw line three times in the closing minutes and would not miss any shot to propel the Tigers to the State Tournament next week.

The two teams met in the National Guard Invitational at Frontenac in January with the Tigers coming away victorious. Unfortunately, the Raiders were unable to return the favor at Fort Scott in the substate tournament.

Entering the game as the number one-seed, the Raiders fell behind in the first, going down by five after a field goal by Brianne Lawerence, forcing Frontenac head coach Jeremy Rakes to take a timeout.

The Raiders managed to get back into the game with a 6-3 run to end the quarter. From there, Frontenac kept it a one-point deficit for most of the first half.

Then, Bailey Flora was sent to the line, where she equalized until Katren Rienbolt answered with a field goal.

Libby Warrick tied the game with an inside shot with 16 seconds before halftime. Amanda Cicero was fouled and hit one from the stripe to give the Raiders their first lead of the night.
Warrick finished the night with six points while Flora had nine.

Rienbolt was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 13 points.

Maddi Allen capped a 4-0 run to start the second half for Fort Scott. Another Tiger field goal and the Raiders were soon trailing by eight.

But Frontenac wasn’t finished as the Raiders hit back-to-back field goals to narrow the gap.
The game started to get physical and Jennifer Long got her fourth personal foul in the third quarter. Rienbolt went to the line to hit both free throws.

A Flora field goal started the fourth on the right note for Frontenac and later, a 3-pointer by Cicero made it 36-32 with Fort Scott in front and 4:35 left.

Down by four, Wilson made it a one-point game with her outside shot and with 2:06 remaining.

Long fouled Lawerence and was done for the night with 1:45 left. Lawerence made both free throws before a 3-pointer by Wilson’s 3-pointer to tie the game.

With desperation approaching, the Raiders had no choice but to foul and the Tigers knew just who to give the ball to and go to the line.

The Raiders end their season with a 18-5 record. The Raiders last went to the state tournament in 2010 and fell to Caney Valley in last year’s substate championship as a 3A school.

The Tigers will head up to Salina for the 4A state tournament next week at the Bicentennial Center.
