The Jim Kelly Baseball League will be playing soon in Pittsburg.
Sign-ups for Fall Ball start August 15 and sign-ups for next spring and summer begin December 1 online at www.kellyleague.org.
The Kelly League received a charter from the Babe Ruth League and will have several different age groups at play: 7-8 machine pitch, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15 and 16-18.
Todd Biggs, league president, issued a press release Thursday stating that Babe Ruth Baseball returning to Pittsburg will bring “substantial, traditional, meaningful postseason tournaments” and something beneficial for everyone who decides to participate in the league.
“They’re eager to have Pittsburg back,” Biggs said in a phone conversation Thursday. “We’re eager to get started and we’re happy to take a part of it.”
The Kelly League honors the past of Pittsburg baseball at the same time the league wants to move into a new future.
Kelly (1919-1997) earned an enshrinement in the Kansas Babe Ruth Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990, for his work in Pittsburg and his time as a District Commissioner (District 5).
Each league and division received a name within the umbrella Kelly League: the Wally Scott League (7-8 machine pitch), the Don Gutteridge League (9-10), the Ray Mueller League (11-12), the Charlie Swartz League (13-15), the John Butler Division (13), the Bill Russell Division (14), the P.J. Forbes Division (15) and the Homer Cole League (16-18).
The younger groups (7-12) are Cal Ripken, the 13-15 year olds are Babe Ruth and the 16-18 year olds are Senior Babe Ruth.
Postseason tournaments begin at the district level, then state and regional before culminating in the World Series. Regions include New England, Midwest Plains, Middle Atlantic, Middle Atlantic, Southwest, Ohio Valley, Pacific Northwest, Southeast and Pacific Southwest.
World Series locations this year include Bentonville, Arkansas; Winchester, Massachusetts; Aberdeen, Maryland; Kitsap County, Washington; Murray, Utah; Van Buren, Arkansas; Weimar, Texas.
The Kelly League plans to hold city league championships and All-Star games in each division. After league championship and All-Star games, the Kelly League will select postseason All-Star teams for Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth and Senior Babe Ruth play.
Pittsburg has already been discussed as a potential host site for district, state, regional and even World Series tournaments.
