MANHATTAN — Pittsburg Post 64 outhit the Hays Eagles 14-12 Friday night during their Kansas American Legion Class AAA State Tournament semifinal.

However, four Post 64 errors and six unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings helped the Eagles claim a 11-8 win and one spot in the championship game. Post 64 plays at high noon today for the other spot, awaiting who emerges from the wreckage of the losers’ bracket.

Hays struck first with four runs in the top of the first and never trailed, although Post 64 had it at 4-3 after one and 5-4 after two, three and four. However, after Hays scored its next six runs, Post 64 only drew as close as the final score with one in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Sam Gilbert, the most consistent Post 64 hitter all summer, led with four hits and three RBI, recording all singles during a 4-for-5 night. Blake Vail accounted for the only extra-base hit with a double.

V.J. Piccini threw 4.1 innings of relief, keeping Hays within shouting distance.

Austin Unrein and Taylor Renz, batting at opposite ends of the Hays lineup, each contributed three RBI, both tied with Gilbert for the game-high RBI total.

Post 64 drops to 31-13 on the season and the Eagles improve to 44-8. Hays pitcher Tyler Woolridge boosted his undefeated record to 9-0.
