PITTSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY
The Pittsburg State football team, the defending NCAA Division II national champion, will open 2012 preseason camp Thursday.

The PSU coaching staff will welcome approximately 140 players to preseason camp. The Gorillas, who were tabbed as the MIAA’s preseason favorite to capture the 2012 conference crown, return 12 players (6 offense, 6 defense) who started five or more games during the national championship season a year ago.
PSU players report to campus Wednesday.

On Thursday, the Gorillas will go through physical testing in the morning and then will take the field for Pitt State’s first practice at 7 p.m. at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.

The Gorillas will practice at 7 a.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Pitt State will practice twice on Tuesday, Aug. 14, with a morning practice at 7 a.m. and an evening practice at 7 p.m. Tuesday’s evening action includes the Gorilla Drill and 3-on-3 drills.

The Gorillas will have a busy day of action on Saturday, Aug. 18. Pitt State will host its annual YMCA Youth Football Clinic at 11 a.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium. The Gorillas then will make an appearance at Pittsburg’s Meadowbrook Mall from 1-3 p.m. for Autograph Day, where the squad will sign team posters and distribute schedule cards. The third annual Ladies Night at the Pitt will take place from 6–7:30 p.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium, and the Gorillas will wrap up the night with a practice under the lights at the stadium.

Pitt State opens defense of its national championship on Thursday, Aug. 30, when the Gorillas travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to face MIAA newcomer Northeastern State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

PSU women’s XC picked first in poll
The Pittsburg State University women’s and men’s cross country teams were selected first and third in the 2012 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll released Tuesday.

The PSU women received 10 of a possible 12 first-place votes and 120 points on their way to being chosen as the preseason favorite. The Gorillas return their top seven runners (Melissa Peden, Kaley Temaat, Bridgette McCormick, Erica Testa, Katelyn Henderson. Alex Moase and Cate Dunn) from a squad that won its second consecutive conference crown last season and finished 15th nationally at the 2011 NCAA Division II Championships.

The Pitt State men's team was tagged third in the poll with 53 points. Only defending conference champion Central Missouri (71 points) and Missouri Southern (65 points) were picked ahead of the Gorillas. The Gorillas only return three of their top seven runners from the 2011 squad, but Pitt State does return its top performer in senior Adam Volkert. Volkert, a 2011 All-American, will look to lead a youthful cast of athletes this fall after guiding the Gorillas to a fourth-place finish at the 2011 MIAA Championships.
