CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Weird, wild and wacky easily describe the high school baseball game played Wednesday between the St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers and the Carl Junction Bulldogs that lasted nearly 3 hours.
For example, Colgan squandered leads of 10-0 and 15-10 in a 16-15 nine-inning loss. Colgan starter V.J. Piccini left the game in the fifth with a 10-8 lead and then reentered the game in the bottom of the ninth only to give up the winning run. Carl Junction won despite committing six errors, five more than Colgan. Colgan senior Jesse Newcomb gave the Panthers their first home run of the year in the final game of the regular season.
Colgan reached the scoreboard first as Carl Junction starter Chase Marrs struggled with his control, walking two batters, and Colgan courtesy runner Christian Smith extended a rundown long enough for Newcomb to plate the first run.
The Panthers scored three in the third, highlighted by a RBI double by Sam Gilbert and two-run home run by Newcomb. Colgan added five in the fourth on three hits and one Carl Junction error. Colton Gilbert and courtesy runner C.J. Russell scored runs on wild pitches and Sam Gilbert scored the fifth run of the frame on a Drew Dawson RBI single. At that point, Colgan led 10-0 and the Bulldogs had predominantly struggled against Piccini.
That started to change in the fourth when Jeff Terry led off with a double. Carl Junction later scored its first run on a throwing error and its second run on a sacrifice fly by Jaren Hulette.
The floodgates came open in the fifth as Carl Junction plated eight runs on three hits and two errors, as well as two hit batters and one wild pitch. Nathan Skaggs, Branche McGriff and Payton Walker each hit doubles. Walker cleared the bases on his double and later scored on a wild pitch.
Colgan answered with five runs in the top of the sixth, pounding out six hits, all singles. Dawson hit a sacrifice fly for a RBI, Colton Gilbert drove in two on his single and Piccini gave Colgan its fifth run of the frame with his single.
Carl Junction promptly tied it back up in the bottom of the sixth with five runs on five hits and one Colgan error. Skaggs and Josh Petty both hit RBI doubles and the Bulldogs scored two runs on sacrifice flies by Keegan Pittman and Walker. McGriff hit a RBI single.

Neither team scored for 2 1/2 innings and then in the bottom of the ninth, back-to-back singles by Marrs and McGriff prepared the table for Petty to hit a walk-off single plating Marrs.
Colgan ends its regular season 12-7 and concludes its seven-games-in-six-days stretch with a 3-4 record. The Panthers have a first-round bye at regionals and wait on Tuesday (4:15 p.m. start) for the Monday night winner of regional host Riverton (9-7) and Erie (0-19).
