One month of our new year has already passed us by. How are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions?
The beginning of a new year sparks enthusiasm to make changes in our lives. New Year’s resolutions are a common tradition. Many people are going to eat healthier, exercise more and spend more time with their spouse and children.
By this time of the year, many people are beginning to become lax on those resolutions for the new year. As most people know, it takes a great deal of effort to keep those goals in mind as the year progresses. It has been proven that it takes about six weeks of change for a new habit to become a routine part of our lifestyle.
Time is a precious asset with limited capacity. We only have twenty-four hours in our day. If we resolve to make a change in our lifestyle in this new year, we can not add additional hours to accommodate that change.
You must become a good manager of your time if you are going to make changes in your live. First make a mental list of your priorities. Are you spending your time where you say your priorities are?
A to-do-list often helps individuals organize their time into urgent deadlines that must be met and into priorities that are meaningful to achieve the goals they have set for themselves and their families.
If eating healthier is your resolution for you and your family, set aside some time to learn new techniques for healthy meal planning and food preparation to avoid the habit of fast food eating. Schedule a couple nights a week for family meals together with everyone joining in with the food preparation. Even the youngest child can help in simple ways by mixing and stirring or setting the table. Don’t forget to include clean-up as part of the family activity.
If increased physical activity is your resolution, how are you going to manage your schedule to plan time for exercise? This is a great way to include time for family at the same time as getting more exercise. Going for a walk, biking, shooting baskets together or going to the park are ways to make more time for physical active while finding more time for family.
For parents raising young children, making time for each other is another goal that can have long lasting benefits for their relationship as a couple as well as the entire family. With the many demands on both parents time, dedicating time to each other on a daily basis can often be difficult.

Just reserving 15 minutes each day to be alone together can be a time management task. You may need to set the alarm earlier in the morning to make time to send even a few minutes together before the rest of the family arises. Some couples make an effort to share some time at the end of the day after the children are in bed.
No matter how you choose to use your time, you can not make more time. You can only become a wise manager of the hours we have in each and every day.
If your New Year’s resolutions are not working by this time of the year, rethink your goals and resolve to use your time in a matter that will help you reach those important goals to benefit you and your family.
