Pittsburg State softball opened its 2013 season in much warmer climes Saturday in the Saint Leo Tournament down in Florida.

The Gorillas won their opener 11-3 over Northwood (Fla.) and dropped their second game of the day 6-5 against Saint Leo.

A strong offensive team last season, Pitt State broke out its bats in the opener — 11 runs on 17 hits, including five extra-base hits and two homers.

Freshman shortstop Jordan Bradshaw made her debut a memorable one — three hits in four at-bats, two runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBI. Kayla Sears blasted a three-run home run. Cheslyn Mitchell went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Haleigh Sills earned the win in her first Pitt State start.

The Lions of Saint Leo, playing their 13th game of the season, benefited from a grand slam home run and a game-winning infield single by Sarah Steiner, who drove in five runs alone with the bases loaded.

Pitt State plated runs on doubles by Riley Campbell and Devon McCreath and Tiffany Brown knocked her first home run of the season.

The Gorillas (1-1) close out play in Florida today with games against Tarleton State and the University of Tampa.
