The Class 4A state wrestling tournament got under way Friday afternoon in the Salina Bicentennial Center, finally getting focus on the mat after early travel plans Wednesday and two start-time delays because of Winter Storm Q (James Bond fans?).
On Wednesday, before the winter storm hit, the first match was delayed 2 hours to noon and on Thursday, after the storm hit, it was delayed to 4 p.m. This delay was assigned to every state wrestling tournament by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
At time of press Friday night, Andale was the overall team leader and Pittsburg was in 19th.
Pittsburg junior Levi Kester earned a spot in the 106-pound semifinals — a first match pin in 3:01 over Bryce Ledford of Winfield and a 12-10 quarterfinals decision over Emmanuel Browne of KC Sumner, who had a 29-6 overall record entering his match against the 22-13 Kester (now 23-13).
Kester faces Bonner Springs junior Josiah Seaton (35-2) in the semis.
At 113, senior Jeremiah Jones lost his opening match to Hunter Furnish of Andale by a 15-6 major decision. A two-time state medalist (freshman and junior years), Jones will have to work his way through the consolation bracket if he wants his third and he started in that direction with a win by 41-second pin against Zac West of Santa Fe Trail in the consolation first round.
Jones faces Concordia freshman Cameron Miller (16-5) in his next match.
Joey Wools (120) and Brett Cobb (132) lost both their matches and have been eliminated. Wools lost by pinfall to Blake Cusick of Mulvane and lost a 6-4 decision to Simon Munoz of Topeka Hayden. Cobb lost by pinfall to Jake Wilson of Rose Hill and lost a 11-3 major decision to Tucker Clark of Baldwin. Cobb ends his season 22-16 and Wools 15-15.
