Mary V. Shead recently learned that her granddaughter, Sarah Shead, Downey, Calif., will lead a mission team this summer to Kenya, Africa. A graduate of Ozark Christian College, Joplin, she is the daughter of Ralph and Cindy Shead, Carl Junction, Mo.
While going through some old files, Larry Shead ran across a certificate of award that was issued to his father, Paul Shead, for excellence in spelling on April 2, 1924. The document was signed by Eva Marchbanks, teacher, and M.A. Callahan, county superintendent. Eva Marchbanks was later known as Mrs. Eva Hinkle. She was Paul Shead’s second grade teacher as Eva Marchbanks and Larry Shead’s first grade teacher as Eva Hinkle.
Charles Corporon and friend Rose Campbell recently visited his sister, Mary V. Shead. Mrs. Campbell is a former student and teacher at Arcadia High School. Her brother, the late Felix Shular, was secretary/treasurer of the Arcadia Alumni Association for several years.
Katy Shead, Fort Scott, celebrated her sixth birthday on March 6 with dinner at Chicken Annie’s and dessert at Braum’s in Pittsburg. Those celebrating her birthday with her were her family, parents Mark and Haley Shead and brother Benjamin, Fort Scott, grandparents Larry and Vickie Shead, Garland, Mary V. Shead, Arcadia, and David, Amy, Haley and Hannah Sachau, Fort Scott.
There was recently to be a guest speaker at the Carl Junction Christian Church in conjunction with the church’s mission emphasis week. Scheduled to speak was Chris DeWelt, formerly a preacher at the Arcadia Christian Church and a missionary to Chile. The morning of the speaking engagement, Carol DeWelt called to report that her husband was sick in bed and would not be able to speak. Ralph Shead, formerly of Arcadia, took the call and was directed to three possibilities for a substitute speaker, including Dave Fish and Phil Casey, both former missionaries to Chile. After calling all three and also a fourth person, Shead still didn’t have a speaker. He called Newt White, the person in charge, and gave him the option of speaking himself or having Shead preach. Shead had preached a missions sermon several weeks prior to the Carl Junction event, and used that sermon for the two morning services that day. The son of Mary V. Shead, Arcadia, he is also a former missionary to Chile.
Kay Gould, Olathe, was traveling on business to Wichita recently and spent some time with her mother, Port Hughes, in McPherson. Ms. Gould is the granddaughter of the late G.W. and Portteus Corporon.
Arcadia High School Our Gang will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 23 at the Arcadia Community Center. Chicken will be on the menu. Those planning to attend should RSVP with Pat Wright.
