Many high school seniors are worried about getting into the school of their choice, and their parents are worried about paying for their child’s college education.

Luke Dainty, Frontenac High School senior, and parents Tim and Julie Dainty, have less anxiety than most.

Dainty recently accepted a Presidential Scholarship at Missouri State University. He is one of only 30 students honored with this opportunity following an in-depth application process. Two hundred students went through personal interviews before the selection was made.

The scholarship covers tuition, residential living and his meal expenses.

His ACT score of 32 presented him with numerous opportunities — Dainty was also offered scholarships to attend Kansas State University, the University of Arkansas and Oklahoma State University.

The young man, however, is not comfortable in taking credit for his accomplishments.

“God has blessed me with this scholarship,” Dainty said. “And there are also other Frontenac High School students who have made outstanding academic accomplishments as well.”

He was born in El Dorado, but has lived in the Pittsburg area since he was 2 and attended Frontenac schools. He is president of his FHS senior class, and has served as class president since seventh grade.

Dainty has played football all four years of high school, ran track for two  years, and played baseball and basketball in his freshman and sophomore years. He was also in the school band for two years.

“I’ve been on the Student Council for four years and I’m president this year,” he said. “I’m also National Honor Society president this year, and treasurer of the Spanish Club.”

Dainty has also been involved with the Pittsburg Avenue of Flags since childhood. This organization puts up the display of veterans’ flags every Memorial Day at Highland Park Cemetery.

“I think I was 4 when I first went out to the cemetery and started helping put up flag poles,” he said. “I got highly involved in eighth grade and I’m vice chairman this year. We’re currently trying to raise funds to construct a new building to store the flags because our old building is falling apart.”

Through the National Honor Society, he has helped with Hearts and Hammers and adopting a family in need during the holidays. The group also rings bells for the Pittsburg Salvation Army every year.

“I’ve helped with the community clean-up in Frontenac, and this will be my fourth year to volunteer for Special Olympics,” Dainty said.

Just how does he find time for all of this?

“I’ve learned from all these activities to manage my time,” Dainty said. “It takes a lot of priority setting.”

He said that he intends to major in religious studies, or possibly have a double major with Spanish, which he could use in the mission field.

“I’m also leaving the door open to law school, but right now my biggest thing is to go into ministry,” Dainty said. “If I did decide to go into law, I’d probably be a street lawyer and help those who aren’t usually represented. The biggest part of life is helping others. Helping people and staying true to the Word is my focus. I’m driven by my faith.”
