South Broadway near Centennial was closed late Friday night after a fire at the abandoned Econolodge hotel at the south end of Pittsburg. The buildings have been vacant since a wind storm last spring.

Fire officials got a call around 9 p.m. of a fire inside the building. Interim fire chief Mike Simons said that the cause of the fire was under investigation, but the fire was limited to contents rather than structure.

“Some old phone books and things like that caught fire,” Simons said.

There had been reports, he said, of squatters in the building, but the investigation has not determined the exact cause of the fire.
