Dear Editor,
On August 12, Steve Boggs wrote an editorial on solving the debt crisis in our country.  He argued for cutting government spending, saying that “we’re going to have to learn to do without” and that these cuts “will be harsh on all of us.”

Really?  How, exactly, are cuts in government spending going to hurt the wealthiest in our country?  And is it really possible to compare the sacrifices a family living in poverty, who rely on social and entitlement programs to eat, to any sacrifices a member of the wealthy elite will have to make as a result of cuts in government spending?

If we are going to be honest about dealing with our country’s debt and the entailing sacrifices needed to be made, we should dispense with these false platitudes on how cutting government spending will hurt every citizen.  Cutting government spending will mostly hurt the poor.  Progressively raising taxes will affect the rich.  While I don’t know about you, I feel much more comfortable asking someone to give up their third yacht than asking someone to give up their third meal.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Wade
