LETTER TO THE EDITOR: PCMS flagpole deserved better

To the editor:
It was old, familiar and a symbol that held meaning for many people and they destroyed it. I’m talking about the flagpole that, for as many years as people could remember, stood at the west end of what was Pittsburg High School and is now PCMS.

It was where you met your friends, the place for ceremonies and assemblies, and the flag on top of that pole greeted hundreds of thousands of people who came down North Broadway over the years.

The existing flagpole wasn’t structurally sound, but why eliminate the flagpole altogether? Why not construct a new one in the same location? Instead, the flagpole was afforded little respect — They simply cut into it, waited for it to fall over, and hauled it away. Problem solved.

The old flagpole was “replaced” with a much smaller flagpole located by the bus exit on Fourteenth Street. They felt that was sufficient. They chose to eliminate a symbol of this country’s freedom and democracy, when now, more than ever, we need to be reminded just how important that flag should be to each of us.

Bill Coleman of Vinylplex showed his patriotism by erecting two very tall flagpoles and flags on his property. PepsiCola, Volvo Rentals, and many others  know the importance of displaying our flag. Too bad maintenance director Jim Newell doesn’t understand that the decision to eliminate the old flagpole and flag was just plain wrong.

Thank you,
