The Pittsburg High School JV tennis squad made its season debut with a first-place finish in a quadrangular involving host Fort Scott, Independence and Iola.

Pittsburg not only took first place, it dominated by winning 11 of its 12 total matches and losing its only match in a 9-7 tiebreaker with Independence.

Katie Phalen took second in No. 1 singles, beating Krystal Smith of Iola 6-1 and Krista Hightower of Fort Scott 6-2 but losing 6-5 (9-7) to KasiDee Cox of Independence.

Emily Curlee won No. 2 singles with victories over Bobbi Sinclair of Iola 6-0, Calisse Papen of Independence 6-1 and Kristian Engle of Fort Scott 6-1.

Lauren Sullivan and Sam Cicero won No. 1 doubles with victories over Alexis Hobbs-Chyanne Vaughn of Iola 6-0, Zoe McCollam-Wendy Mejia of Independence 6-3 and Aubin Duff-Jasmine Davis of Fort Scott 6-2.

Emily Hicks and Chelsy McQuarie swept No. 2 doubles by defeating Baleigh Seeber-Allyson Hobbs of Iola 6-0, Katie Capps-Kaylee Bryant of Independence 6-4 and Char Hutchison-Emmah Reeves of Fort Scott 6-1.

Pittsburg opens its varsity season Thursday in Parsons.

Team results: Pittsburg 11, Independence 8, Fort Scott 3, Iola 2.
