Four returning starters will help the Northeast volleyball team this year, but it will be new faces to the team that could help shape the season.

Liz Wood is chief among those fresh faces. She is a first-year head coach for the volleyball team, and she said that she expects big things out of her team.

“We’re kind of a young team. I’m expecting the girls to work hard, and I expect them to be disciplined,” Wood said. “I want to see leadership out of my returners to help with the younger girls to develop their skills.”

It’s interesting to note that Wood said “returners” rather than “seniors.” In fact, there is only one returning starter that is a senior — Laci Scholes.

The other returners are juniors Toni Ziebert and Morgan Maransani, as well as sophomore JayCie Hines.

Technically, senior Layla Schlee is returning as a setter for the team, but Schlee did not play last year, and is returning to the volleyball team.

Wood said she expects Ziebert and Maransani to man the middle, with Scholes and Hines on the outside.

“I look for them to step up, especially Toni and Morgan. I look for them to be leaders. We only have two seniors on our team, and Laci’s one of them.
Rounding out the team are freshmen Jaycie Pohlhopek and sophomore Amber DeMaranville.

Coach Wood said she wants to see the team continue to improve and strive for success.

“Defensively, I want us to play hard. Offensively, I want them to know what they’re doing,” Wood said. “We need to be able to move between defense and offense quickly, and consecutively serve the ball.”

Ultimattely, the wins and losses, she said, will come about as the result of continued improvement and team togetherness.

“I’m expecting us to come out and work hard. All I ever ask is that they work hard and do their best, and to leave it all out on the floor,” Wood said. “I want them to have no regrets. I’m expecting them to be competitive. I hope to represent what a team looks like. It looks like aa family, and works hard. We’ll go after every loose ball. I want us to be fun to watch.”

The Northeast Vikings were the Three Rivers League boys cross country champions last year. Coach Piper Richardson would like to see that continue, even with the loss of two of those starters to graduation.

Cross Country
The Northeast Vikings were the Three Rivers League boys cross country champions last year. Coach Piper Richardson would like to see that continue, even with the loss of two of those starters to graduation.

Chief among those runners returning will be sophomore Michael Toms, who was named All-League last year. Toms qualified for state competition, as well.

Juniors Cody Roberts and Chad Brennon will fill out the list of upperclassmen for Richardson. The other returners include sophomores Denis Hensley, Cameron Crigler and Cooper Wade.

Sophomores Timmy Peternell and Seth Chandler will also compete for experience, with freshmen Ethan Snider, Justin Jackson and Micah Howard looking to contribute.

On the girls side, Hope Cole returns, also a sophomore. She was also an All-League selection, and sophomore Kaylee Bogina will join the team for the first year after becoming a state qualifier as a freshman in track in the one- and two-mile races. Freshman Devin Gillis completes the girls side.

“I tell you what, on the boys side, I think we’re good enough to place again in the top of the league. Hopefully, to win league. We lost two runners, but we have a great group of kids on the boys side,” Richardson said. “On the girls side, we are going to have to look to the individual side with only three runners.”
