Marvin A. Bacon, 88, of Pittsburg, KS, formerly of Cherokee, KS, passed away at 2:40 p.m., Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at the Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, Pittsburg.
He was born to Benjamin and Nellie (Ard) Bacon on September 15, 1919, at rural Moran, KS. He attended school in Moran and graduated from Moran High School in 1938. He was a farmer and stockman.
Mr. Bacon married Pauline (Clugston) Murray, December 6, 1953, and moved to Cherokee, KS, where he continued to farm and raise livestock until retiring in 1990. Pauline preceded him in death on December 21, 2002.
He was a member of the Cherokee United Methodist Church, Lone Star Grange, Cherokee County Livestock Association, Cherokee County Farm Bureau and served on the board for a number of years going to Washington D.C., as a delegate in March of 1986, served on the Cherokee Grade School Board for several years, helped organize Rural Water District #5 of Cherokee County, KS, and served as President for many years. On September 26, 1997, he suffered a severe stroke. He and his wife moved to Pittsburg in January of 1998. In April of 2003, he became a resident of Cornerstone Village.
Survivors include a son, Steven Bacon and wife Janet of Pittsburg, KS, a daughter, Frances Pyle and husband Jim, of Pittsburg, KS, two step-sons, James Murray and wife Jean of Newark, Ohio, and John Murray and wife Bea of Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, two step-daughters, Edith Scott and husband Bill of Pittsburg, KS, and Carolyn Stieger and husband Val of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Joan Bledsoe of Kansas City, MO, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife he is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Arolyn of California, and one brother, Newt of Moran, KS.
Services for Mr. Bacon are set for 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 11, 2008, at the Cherokee United Methodist Church, Cherokee, KS, with Reverend Daryl Gaddy and Reverend Bob Banks conducting the service. Burial will follow in the Cherokee City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., Sunday at the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10:00 a.m., Saturday. The family suggests memorials to the Cherokee United Methodist Church.
