Ott Martin, born October 30, 1909 in Faulkner Kansas, passed away while a patient at Freeman hospital in Joplin, Missouri on May 8th 2008 at the age of 98.
He lived most of his life in the Columbus, Pittsburg, Crestline and Riverton area. His early years were spent as a farmer just west of Riverton before he moved to Wichita, Ks, to work in the BeechCraft aircraft factory during World War II.
He then returned to southeast Kansas where he and his brother Ralph built and operated Martin Brothers Garage on Langdon Lane in Pittsburg for almost 20 years. While helping at the garage he worked full-time as a welder at McNally’s manufacturing until moving to Atkinson’s Armature Works where he retired in 1975.
After retirement he spent many enjoyable hours gardening, canning, becoming a master pie baker and pampering his azaleas. In his late 60s he took up his version of ballroom dancing with the Thursday night senior citizen dances in Columbus being one of the highlights of his life which he enjoyed up until one month ago.
He was preceded in death by his father Edward Cyrus Martin, his mother Cora Dell Gibson Martin, four brothers, George, Frank, Millard, Ralph and three sisters, Billie Hiatt, Lela Bickham and Lula Marshall.
Ott and Marjorie M Williams were united in marriage Aug. 11th, 1935. She preceded him in death on Nov. 7th, 1970. He is survived by one daughter, Linda Dell Martin, Inola, OK and three sons, Donald D. Martin and wife Maggie of Austin, TX, Richard E. Martin and wife Sandra of Strafford, OK and Otto and wife Brenda of Riverton, KS., seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday May 12, 2008 at the Riverton Friends Church with Pastor Wes Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the Lowell Cemetery, Lowell, KS. Visitation will be 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday evening at the Murdock Funeral Home, 132 E Pine, Columbus, KS 66725. Memorials may be made to the Riverton Friends Church with the church or Murdock Funeral Home serving as custodian.
