Margaret Jane Brown Dillon passed peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, KS with family and special cargivers at her side. She had resided in Pittsburg, close to family members, since June of 2007. Margaret was born on July 20, 1920 on a farm northwest of Dwight, KS to Etta Jane (Overholtz) and Arthur W. Brown. She had one brother, Jack, who preceded her in death as have her parents and an infant sister.
The Browns moved into Junction City, Ks in 1928 where Margaret graduated from Junction City High School in 1938. She worked in Junction City until June, 1941 when she traveled by train to Washington D.C. to join her high school sweetheart and fiancé, Vernon R. Dillon. They were married at the National City Christian Church on June 29, 1941 and resided in Washington area until Vernon left the FBI to join the Navy. The couple was living in Ogden, UT when their daughter was born in 1946. Shortly thereafter they moved back to Kansas where they spent the rest of their lives, mostly in Topeka.
Margaret continued to work as a secretary whereever the couple lived. In 1954 after settling in Topeka she went to work for the Topeka School System, USD 501, as a school secretary. She was the secretary at Oakland (Lundgren) Elementary School for 32 years, retiring in 1986.
After retirement Margaret and her husband became volunteers at Stormont-Vail where she continued to serve for thirteen years. In 2007 Margaret was recognized for 4500 hour of work. It was after this that she retired again and moved to Pittsburg where she spent her final years.
Margaret was a devoted Christian and has belonged to the Oakland Christian Church for over 55 years. She also belonged to the Topeka Association of Educational Secretaries, the Kansas Association of Educational Secretaries and a life member of the Lundgren PTA.
Margaret Dillon is survived by her daughter, Donna Vee (Amick) Sheldon and husband Lance; three grandchildren, Monty (Megan) Amick, Michael Amick (Heidi Gluck) and Maggie Amick (Kelci Cooper); and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband, Vernon, of nearly 60 years preceded her death in 2001.
A memorial service will be held at Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka KS 66608 at 11:00 am on Wednesday, Sept. 20th. A memorial service will be held in Pittsburg at Via Christi Village at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission or to Midland Hospice of Topeka in care of the funeral home.
