Mary Lee Mein, 95, of Girard, died at 5:30 P.M., Wednesday, October 1, 2008 in the Girard Medical Center.
She was born August 20, 1913 near Hepler to William and Amanda (Ausman) Hagemann. She grew up in the Hepler area and was graduated from Hepler Rural High School in 1930. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from KSTC, now PSU, in 1934 and a Master of Arts degree from State University of Iowa in 1938. Her first year of teaching was at Emmett, Kansas in 1934 and 1935. She taught at PSU from 1935 until 1945. She married Lorenz Otto Mein on September 20, 1945 in Pittsburg. The couple lived on a farm near Hepler before moving to Girard in 1973. He preceded her in death on June 2, 2002. She taught at Immanuel Lutheran School near Hepler for one year and at high schools in Hepler, Stark, and Thayer during the time schools were being unified and reorganized. She taught in Girard from 1969 until retiring in 1976 after 41 years of teaching.
She was a sponsor of the PSU College YWCA, the Phi Mu Gamma sorority, the Kappa Delta Kappa fraternity and the Girard Y-Teens. She was a member of Pi Omega Pi and Kappa Delta Pi national honor organizations. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at rural Hepler and the Immanuel Ladies Bible Class; past president of the Girard Ladies Reading Club and an honorary member and past president of the Gem Seekers Study Club of Hepler. She had also served on the Board of Trustees for the Raymond Community Home in Girard. She was a local, state, and national member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Half Century Club of the PSU Alumni Association since 1984. There are no immediate survivors.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 Monday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor John Stubenrouch officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9 A.M., Monday until service time. Friends may call after 1:00 P.M., Sunday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.
