James Howard Smiley, 63, of rural Arcadia passed onto be with the Lord  at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 15, 2009 at his home after fighting a two-year battle with an illness.
Mr. Smiley was born July 16, 1946 at Hammond, Indiana the son of William and Juanita Cooke Smiley. Jim worked as a masonry for many years in Chicago, Pittsburg, and Florida areas. Jim also worked in the Chanute area for six years as a licensed social worker. He was raised in the Chicago area and attended elementary and high school. He later attended Pittsburg State University and received a degree in social work.  He married Helen Morris Kukovich on September 27, 1985 at Ft. Pierce, Florida. Mrs. Smiley survives at the home. Jim was a member of the Arma Family Christian Church in Arma and the Masonic Lodge at Mulberry. Survivors include his wife Helen of the home, two daughters, Sarah Haney of Crown Point, Indiana and Rachel Smiley of rural Arcadia, four step-sons, Tim Kukovich of the home, Troy Kukovich of Frontenac, James Kukovich of Pittsburg, and Travis Kukovich of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a foster daughter, Cheryl Robinson of rural Arcadia, a niece, Judy Stansberry of Arcadia who helped provide for his care in the last stages of his illness, a brother, Gary Smiley of Palm Beach, Florida, a sister, Sharon Brees of Pittsburg, four grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Bill Smiley, his mother, Juanita Prince, and a brother, Wayne Prince.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Sheffield Cemetery near Arcadia with Pastor Jeff Rose officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma. The family suggests memorials to the Hospice Compassus. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.
