Elizabeth “Bette” Scammell, 89, of Girard, died at 1:32 p.m., Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at West Ridge Assisted Living in Girard where she lived since December of 2000. The family would like to thank the staff at West Ridge and Harry Hynes Hospice for the loving care she received.
She was born December 7, 1922 at rural Farlington, Kansas, a daughter of Frank and Mary (Pierc) Cremosnik. She attended school near Farlington, then Girard High School for three years before graduating from Fort Scott High School.
She married Clarence W. “Pug” Scammell on October 11, 1939 in Columbus, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 29, 2000.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Girard and the United Methodist Women and very active in both before her health failed.
She enjoyed her family, gardening, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and cooking for her family and friends.
Survivors are daughters Barbara Denton and her husband Larry of St. Marys, Kansas and Ruth Waller and her husband Tom of Argyle, Texas; her daughter-in-law Mary Scammell of Dallas, Texas; Eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Scammell in 2002; four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Girard with Rev. Steve Cole officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until service time at the church and friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church and these may be left at the church or the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
