Warren Murphy, 90, of Girard, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Girard Medical Center after a brief illness.

Warren was born southwest of Girard on July 1, 1922 to parents Hoyt and Hattie (Nye) Murphy. He attended Cyclone Grade School and graduated Girard High School in 1940. After graduation, he attended welding school before becoming an aircraft welder at Cessna Aircraft in Hutchinson, Kansas, and, later, Wichita, Kansas.

Warren served in the Army Air Force during World War II from 1943-1946, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the 420th air service squadron in the China/Burma/India Theatre.  It was one of three mobile aircraft repair squadrons activated during the war.

After the war, Warren returned home and began farming. He married Marjorie Ann Smith on June 17, 1951, in the First Presbyterian Church in Girard.  In addition to farming, Warren worked at Helio Aircraft in Pittsburg as the welding shop foreman from 1955 until it closed in the mid-1980’s.

Warren was an active cattleman, farmer, and community leader. His polled Hereford herd, and later, Angus herd, was a great source of pride to him.  He served as secretary of the Crawford County Hereford Association for many years. He was a member of the Hospital District # 1 (currently Girard Medical Center) Board of Directors from 1966 -1987. He was the longest serving member of the Crawford County Regional Planning and Zoning Commission, having  completed 29 years of service from 1964-1993. He participated in Girard Lodge No. 93 A.F. & A.M. and the Fort Scott Scottish Rite.  He was a member and Elder Emeritus of the First Christian Church in Girard.

Warren’s love of music and wonderful tenor voice was present throughout his life. He began singing at weddings and funerals at the age of 16 and was a member of the chancel choirs of the First Presbyterian Church and the First Christian Church for many years.   

Warren is survived by his wife Marjorie of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Martha Murphy of Girard; his daughter and son-in-law,  Phyllis and Frank Curtis of Olathe; his grandchildren, Jeff Murphy and wife Sabrina; Molly Murphy, Zeke Hornbaker, Kyal Hornbaker, and Sarah Curtis; and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Aubree Murphy.
A son, Brian, preceded him in death in 1989. Surviving siblings include a sister, Alice Nordquist of Novato, California; and brother Howard Murphy of Girard.  Two brothers, Lawrence Murphy and Charles Murphy, preceded him in death.
 A friend’s call will be held Friday, December 7, 2012 at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  A celebration of Warren’s life will be held Saturday, December 8, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Girard with Rev. Doug Amend officiating.  Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.  The family requests memorial contributions to the Girard Medical Center Foundation or the First Christian Church Scholarship Fund and these may be left at the church or the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Friday.
