Jennie Careggio of Croweburg, Kansas, aged 101 years and 8 months, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at her home with family at her side.

Mrs. Careggio was born Jan. 18, 1911, at Chicopee, the daughter of Angelo and Elisa (Marchetti) Carzoli. Her family moved in 1912 to Croweburg, where she lived the remainder of her life. She attended schools in Croweburg and Arma. She and John Rocco Michele Careggio were married at Girard on July 16, 1927. They were married for 67 years. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1994. In addition to being a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker, she worked alongside her husband in their business, Careggio’s Service Station and Grocery, for 43 years, retiring in 1975. All her life she worked to help those around her, beginning as a young girl doing chores on her parents’ farm and continuing into adulthood with family, friends, and others. Even into her late years, her work ethic remained strong and intact. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma, and also held memberships in AARP #646 Pittsburg, the Crawford County Historical Society, and the Farm Bureau Demonstration Unit. Sheserved on the local election board for 30 years. Jennie’s hobbies included reading, bowling, fishing, crocheting, and flower gardening. She loved preparing dinners for relatives, friends, and family. Her holiday dinners featured many Italian specialties and were always a delight for her guests. In grade school she played on the Croweburg basketball team. She was a great fan of KU basketball and enjoyed St. Louis Cardinals baseball. Survivors include a duaghter, Elizabeth M. Foster Kascht (Harvey), Overland Park, Kan.; a son, John D. Careggio of Springfield, Mo.; two granddaughters, Nancy A. Dunn and Vicki E. Rodman (Mark), all of Overland Park; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters (Marie Briscoe, Rose Carzoli, and Katie Dugone) and two brothers (Theodore “Ted” Carzoli and Domenic “Bubbles” Carzoli).

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma with Father Roger Lumbre as the celebrant. Burial will be at the Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery. Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Monday at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma, where the family will receive friends until 7:30 p.m. following the rosary. The family has requested that the casket remain closed. The family suggests memorials to the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Angels Among Us, or a charity of your choice. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, KS 66712.
