George W. McCormick 87, of Joplin, MO passed away 8:30 a.m., Tuesday July 7, 2009 at his home following a short illness.
George was born March 28, 1922 in Carona, KS the son of George A. and Lula Spencer McCormick. He attended area schools.
On September 12, 1942 he married Alma Morris in Fredonia, KS; she preceded him in death on February 7, 1980. In March of 1981 he married Georgia Rice in Miami, OK; she preceded him in death on December 30, 1999. He was a boilermaker in WWII with an EAME Companion Medal with four Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and a WWII Victory Medal. He served in Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland Central Europe.
He worked in food processing for Safeway Foods for 25 years. He previously worked as a miner in Picher, OK and Frisco Railroad. He was of the Christian Faith and a member of the Crestline Baptist Church. He also loved Flea Markets, his dogs and most of all his family.
Survivors include his children Pamela Perrice and husband Ron of Mt. Vernon, MO; Robert Rice of Webb City, MO; Carolyn Vediz and husband Eggie of Pittsburg, KS; Jim Rice and wife Lois of Joplin, MO; Denny Rice and wife Debbie of Mulberry, KS; sister Martha Dobkins of Columbus, KS; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Frank McCormick and Theodore “Dugan” McCormick; sisters Anna Buergin, Agnes Barrett and Susie Baird.
Memorial Services will be 11 a.m., Friday July 10, 2009 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, KS with Rev. Paul Duncan officiating. Military Flag Folding Ceremonies will take place following the service. Burial of remains will take place at a private date in Park Cemetery in Columbus, KS.
