Richard C. Thompson 83, of Girard, died Saturday August 23, 2008, at his home following a long illness. Richard was born October 31, 1924 in Independence, Kan., the son of Charles and Irma (Ogden) Thompson. He was raised in this area and was a graduate of Pittsburg High School in 1943. After high school he joined the Navy and served during WWII. On October 18, 1953 he married Lois Colegrove in Girard. After the war he lived in Overland Park where he worked for Bendix as an Electrical Engineer until he retired in 1983. After retirement he spent his winters in Texas. He and his wife later settled in the Girard Farlington area. Richard was a member of the Farlington United Methodist Church. He enjoyed R.C. model airplanes, fishing, golfing, model trains, counted cross-stitching and spending time with family.
Survivors include his wife of the home; sons Dennis Thompson and wife Nicky of Cincinnati, Ohio, Stuart Thompson and wife Linda of Olathe, Kan., Steven Thompson of Shawnee, Kan. Twelve grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Donald Thompson.
Memorial Services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday August 27, 2008 at the Farlington United Methodist Church in Farlington, Kan., with Rev. Steven Cole officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg. Family will receive friends from 7p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday August 26, 2008 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg. Friends may call after 12pm on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the American Cancer Society.
