Ira Owen Johnston, 87 of Pittsburg, formerly of McCune, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday January 27, 2013 at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.
He was born September 9, 1925 in McCune, KS the son of Owen and Mabel (Laird) Johnston. He lived in the Southeast Kansas most of his life. He was a graduate of McCune Elementary and High School and received his BS and MS from Kansas State University. Ira taught Vo-technical Agriculture at McCune High School for 28 years and was a Real Estate broker and appraiser for over 10 years working until age 81.
Ira married Donna Lee Stewart in 1948 in Pittsburg; she preceded him in death on July 16, 1972. He then married Dorothy Sjorlund in 1973 in Parsons, they were later divorced.
He was a member of the McCune United Methodist Church, was an FFA Advisor and was instrumental in organizing and beginning the Young Farmer’s Association Chapter in Southeast Kansas.
Survivors include a daughter Sheila Hensley-Johnson and husband Albert of Pittsburg, a son Doug Johnston and wife Patty of Lee’s Summit, MO; daughter-in-law Karen Johnston of Pittsburg; 2 step-sons Brad and Jason Sjorlund; a brother Marvin Johnston of McCune; 9 Grandchildren-Shannon Hensley, Caleb Hensley, Nathan Hensley, Deidre Spahn, Miranda Caskey, Andrea Howell, Douglas Ira Ray Johnston, Benjamin Johnston, Jana Johnston, 12 1/2 Great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Donna, a son Jeffrey Owen Johnston, a brother Clyde Johnston and 3 sisters Edna Leigh, Lois Amos and Nadine Mullen.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday February 2, 2013 at the McCune United Methodist Church with Pastor Linda Eads officiating. Burial will follow in the McCune City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Friday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg where friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
