Carol L. Aikman, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, Companion and Friend, passed away on Wednesday March 6, 2013 at her home in Glendale, Arizona.
She was born October 27, 1931 in Ottawa, Kansas to L.W (Bus) and Virginia Mae Whitacre Sutherland. She later moved to Parsons, Kansas and Labette City, Kansas. She graduated Labette County High School in Altamont, Kansas in 1950. She married Dale Stice in Bentonville, on Arkansas May 25, 1950. From this union she bore four children; Bill, Cheryl, Christi and Caron. They later divorced and she married George W. Aikman on October 7, 1974. George passed away April 3, 1990.
She worked at raising her family and became employed at the U.S. Census Bureau in Pittsburg. In May of 1965 she moved her family from Parsons to Pittsburg. She worked at the Census Bureau until July 1987 when she was placed on involuntary retirement.
She was involved in many volunteer projects after retirement. While working with NARFE Chapter 550 she was Coordinator for Region V Alzheimer/NARFE covering 7 states. She worked with the American Legion Post #64 serving lunch to the Special Olympics on their Winter Events Day and team management Special Olympics Kansas Southwest.
She also worked with the VFW 1058 and American Legion #64 Auxiliary. She was also a foster mother and considered “Mom” to many of her children’s friends.
She moved to Glendale, Arizona in October 2006. Her health faltered after having two heart surgeries. She is survived by four children and their partners, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two brothers: Larry W. (Bus) Sutherland of Corpus Christi, Texas; Leslie E. (Buddy) Sutherland of Parsons, Kansas; four sisters: Pat Rivera of Mulvane, Kansas; Loretta Vail of Richland Hills, Texas; Barbara Pointer of Choctaw, Oklahoma; and Donna Pollock of Thayer, Kansas, a Sister-in-Law June Vanderpool; many nieces and nephews and her very dear companion Steve Elliott.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, Brother Duane and Mother Wilma Kinseh, Niece Natalie Pointer, niece Penny Vanderpool, nephew Michael Nash and nephew Steven Rivera.
Visitation details will be announced by the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg, Kansas. Private burial will be in the family plot at Crocker Cemetery. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com.
