Edwin L. “Epp” Payne, 85, of Pittsburg, died at 3:55 p.m. Monday, June 29, 2009 at the St. John’s Regional Medical Center following a short illness.
He was born February 21, 1924 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Lee L. and Martha (Lee) Payne.  He attended area schools and graduated from the Pittsburg High School with the Class of 1941.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy with the Navy Band.
On May 15, 1943 he was united in marriage to Virginia “Lala” Morey in Pacific Grove, CA; she survives him of the home.
Epp was the owner & operator of Pittsburg Transfer and Storage Company in Pittsburg from 1951 until his retirement on March 1, 1990.
He was a member of the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post #64 in Pittsburg.
Additional survivors include a son Mike (Kay) Payne of Overland Park, KS; 4 daughters: Mary (Mike) Gilmore of Elkhart, KS Christine White of Wichita, KS, Barbara (Dave) Mathews of Lone Tree, CO and Lee Ann (Ron) Yartz of Overland Park, KS; 11 Grandchildren: John Gilmore, Julie Polk, Matthew Payne, Carrie Henderson, Emily Burgard, Caitlin White, Cameron Mathews, Erin Mathews, Greg Yartz, Lindsay Yartz and Megan Yartz; 11 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruth Denison.
Funeral services will be 10 am, Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral home with Fr. Thomas Stroot officiating.  Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.  A rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Wednesday where the family will receive friends following the rosary.  Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com.  Memorials may be left to Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund and/or The Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post 64; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.  Military Rites and Flag folding will be given by the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post 64.  Services are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway, Pittsburg, KS.
