George S. Thomas, 95 of Pittsburg, KS, died at 1:20 am, Sunday November 1, 2009 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg, KS.  He had been in ill health for 10 days and a patient in the hospital for one week.

He was born August 22, 1914 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas the son of Jim and Bessie Thomas.  George was an only child reared by his aunt due to his mother’s death at an early age.  He played Negro League Baseball for seven years as a member of the Indianapolis Clowns and had been a resident of Pittsburg for over 40 years.

George worked for the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Pittsburg, until his retirement.  He leaves no survivors except for his caregiver Jeff Wilbert of Pittsburg.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home & Crematory, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg with Father Thomas Stroot, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg officiating.  Inurnment will be in Highland Park Cemetery, Pittsburg.  A memorial has been established in George’s name to the St. Mary’s-Colgan Booster Club.  Memorials may be left at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home & Crematory in Pittsburg.
