Gerald Denzil “Jerry” Pile, age 73, a longtime Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader passed from this life, from a sudden illness, on Friday, August 17, 2012 at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, Mo.

Jerry was born April15, 1939 in Hamilton, Missouri to the union of L.D. “Ernie” and Addie May (Hicks) Pile. He graduated from Erie High School in 1957.  Jerry married Kay Lynne Massine, of Frontenac, in 1961.  Together, they had 1 son, Jared Pile.  They divorced later in life.  Jerry left the area for a short time while serving his Country in the United States Army. Since 1972, he has since resided back in the Pittsburg area.  Most of Jerry’s life, he was self employed, as he was the founder of the South Pole Ice Company, the Lone Star Superet, and Shaw Distributing.  During the retirement years, Jerry enjoyed working as a concessionaire for various auctions around the area.

Jerry’s most passionate hobby was Scouting. Throughout the years, Jerry was active as the Tiger Cub Leader, Den Leader,  and Cub Master for Pack 87 in Frontenac,  the Scoutmaster for Troop 87 in Frontenac, and Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 81,  in Pittsburg.  Jerry helped train many others to be in Scouting positions as he served as the Training Chairman and District Commissioner for the Osage District, as well as the Chapter Advisor for the Order of the Arrow, and the Woodbadge Training Staff.  Jerry’s accolades and honors in Scouting include the Golden Sun Award, the District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver Award. Jerry attended Key 3 training at the Philmont Training Center in 1989, and led a trek that included his son to the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico in the summer of 1990.  Jerry was a Vigil Honor member of Order of the Arrow, an honor camping organization in Scouting.  He also held memberships at the United Methodist Church and the American Legion, both of Frontenac; and the Masonic Lodge and the Mirza Shrine Temple of Pittsburg.  Jerry made several lifetime friends and touched the lives of many young children through Scouting.  He loved spending time with his family and 3 grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by one son, Jared Pile and wife, Dr. Jill Saia Pile, of Frontenac, KS; two brothers Ray Pile of Fredonia, KS, and Donald Pile of Kansas City; three grandchildren Hayden, Vincenzo, and Giana; and daughter-in-law, Jessica Southard of Frontenac, KS.  He is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Bedene Funeral Home, in Arma, KS. Pastor Ray Pile will officiate the services and visitation will follow immediately after.  Once services are completed, Jerry has been entrusted to Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel for cremation with private family burial at a later date. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial donations to be made to the Ozark Trails Council Memorial Fund to support camperships and advancements for local Scouts.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
