Dear Editor:
The spirit of volunteerism will be alive and well on Make A Difference Day, Oct. 27, when Americans nationwide work together to make their communities better places to live.

Civic-minded folks seeking to make a difference in Crawford County should consider volunteering for the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and/or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.  VITA and TCE volunteers help low income, senior and military taxpayers to prepare their federal taxes, free of charge.

Last year, trained volunteers in Kansas prepared more than 42,500 returns for refunds worth more than $54 million.  Almost $12 million of those refunds was due to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable tax credit available to low income taxpayers.

More than 700 returns were prepared by volunteers from in Crawford County and the IRS is seeking additional partner organizations to host new VITA/TCE sites to prepare more during the 2013 filing season.

For more information about IRS volunteer tax programs, go to www.IRS.gov and type the key words “tax volunteer” in the search box.  To volunteer for VITA and/or TCE, and help make a positive difference in others’ lives, call Sandra Walker at 816-966-2308.
