To the editor,
Last week I attended the candidate forum between Rep. Bob Grant and challenger Jeff Locke. It’s too bad there was such a low turnout, because there are several differences between the candidates.
Mr. Locke said in his opening statement that he was all about jobs. Bringing more jobs to our area would be his primary focus and jobs will bring economic prosperity. He also stated several times that we, the voter, know what we want and accordingly government should respect our opinions.
Having made those statements, I found his answer to a question regarding changes to the current gaming legislation to allow a possible re-opening of Camptown interesting. He said that while the voters of Crawford County overwhelmingly supported Camptown, he didn’t think it would be successful as all the gaming is in Oklahoma now.
I realize that opening Camptown would not be the “savior” to our economic problems; it sure would be a huge start! Obviously, jobs would result from the track opening, which is one of Mr. Locke’s primary objectives. Furthermore, the citizens did make their intentions known, yet this isn’t good enough. It seems that Mr. Locke would support voters making their voices heard so long as they agree with him.
I have watched Rep. Grant support gaming legislation numerous times, even introducting or co-sponsoring legislation. When you go to the polls to cast your vote, remember that Rep. Grant has fought for southeast Kansas time after time.
