LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Privatization a poor idea for progress

Dear Sir,
I have read the letter to the editor by Mr. Roger Wood of Sunday, January 6 (twice as it was printed earlier as well). While I do not have a dog in the fight about trash haulers, I do believe that the person who pays the bill should have the right to decide who delivers the service. He suggests “privatization” for the city as some kind of solution. I have never been a fan of privatization of government services. It just doesn’t seem to work and generally hurts the institution along with the customers.

Privatization is a bad idea for the city and for PSU as he suggested it as a way to curb that hot bed of wild-eyed liberalism. I was blissfully unaware of the situation at Pitt State, having met some pretty conservative university instructors and staff and always thought the administration maintained a pretty moderate profile. If a a student wants a weighted conservative education, there are a number of private colleges around that would accommodate them, although at a higher cost than a state facility. Privatization would affect an increase in fees at PSU and a decrease of: enrollment, opportunity for local students, flow of money into Crawford County, jobs that are attractive to the work force, the athletic program that contributes so much to the area, jobs for Crossland, etc. What a benefit for this part of Kansas that would be! Perhaps Mr. Wood could convince Kansans for Liberty to open their own institution.
Thank you,
Lynn Grant
