Dear Editor,
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING - the turnout at the meeting described yesterday in John Sullivan’s “My View” column.  People get excited  when they receive this invitation:  “The City Manager asked me to gather  people who are interested in bringing more events to the downtown district and exploring ways to coordinate those events to get more investment downtown.”

Here’s the back story on this meeting.  Commissioner Marty Beezley  understands that my work to reopen the Colonial Fox Theatre is about strengthening the downtown and she invited me to meet with her and City manager Daron Hall to talk about how we could further those efforts.  Daron would like to see 30 to 50 events this year to bring more people downtown.  He like to see all of the bar owners get together to talk about coordinating events.  Marty added that she’d like to see a broad representation: retail owners, PSU student leaders, young professionals, old professionals, everyone who has an interest in what could happen in the downtown district.

That was on Friday, December 28.  By Saturday  the bar owners were on board. By January 3 we had set the date, the location and sent  59 invitations.  We went so fast, that we inadvertently cut Daron out of the pack by scheduling against the Trash Meeting.  However, Jay Byers, City Innovative Director, more than filled the gap.

The common denominator of this group is the desire to work together to create a great downtown. The  strength is the City’s backing.

Sincerely,
Vonnie Corsini
