Dear editor,
I was pleased to see the letter from the IRS printed in the October 25 Morning Sun. It encouraged individuals to volunteer for the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assitance (VITA) and/or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.
To my knowledge, there is no VITA program operating in our area at the present time. However, AARP Tax-Aide operates the TCE program in this area with sites at the Pittsburg Public Library, the Girard Public Library and the VFW post in Parsons. Volunteers are needed at all these sites. Despite its designation as tax counseling for the elderly, AARP Tax-Aide serves both the elderly and low-income persons of all ages.
Rather than go to the IRS website to volunteer, I encourage all interested persons to go to the Kansas Tax-Aide website (www.kstaxaide.com/) and choose the “Become a Volunteer” link. This is much easier than using the IRS website.
