Dear Editor,
PSU athletics is the front porch of the campus. It is the opinion of countless people that the front porch is in desperate need of repair. The porch has holes, leaks, rusty nails and is buckling under the pressure of an 800 pound Gorilla: Chuck Broyles. Wins have acted as a band aid to a larger problem. A 5-6 record for the 2009 Gorilla football team is a problem, but it is how we arrived at 5-6 that is most concerning.
Chuck Broyles is a figure-head. He is a man so removed from recruiting, day to day coaching and basic involvement with players that he forgets player’s names, dictates from a distance and has lost their respect. Thankfully his assistant coaches have held the program together.
However, they work under the constraints put on them by the person in charge: Chuck Broyles. Gorilla Nation deserves better and we demand better effort be put into the great kids that attend PSU.
The situation has reached critical mass. Something must be done. He has become more about what he can accomplish for himself than for his team and school.
His “losing season” quote in last week’s Sun revealed to the public what many on have known for a long time: He is arrogant enough to stick around and drag a program and athletic department down.
His era is full of great feats and accomplishments that can’t be erased, but his era is at an end and needs to be put to rest.
Respectfully,
