To the Editor:
Pittsburg’s city commission is talking trash and the community is none too happy about the discussion--for good reason. Some of the changes proposed could force our local trash haulers, who do their job well, out of business. Yes, 30% of Pittsburg residents do not contract for trash service. But the commissioners seem to be missing the point: as former mayor Ralph McGeorge argued, Pittsburg does not have a trash problem, it has a codes enforcement problem. Placing trash service up for bid will not solve our problem; enforcement of city ordinances will. But, alas, the commission seems unwilling to do this. After all, look at the scores of blighted properties across town: the abandoned motel at Centennial and Broadway, the burned out flower shop on Walnut, and the dilapidated Washington School come to mind. Unless and until the commission enforces the ordinances it passes, we will make no progress.
Pittsburg needs a clean sweep, and I intend to pitch in. Join me at the polling place for the city commission elections next April and let’s clean out City Hall.
