I would like to comment on Pittsburg trash service changes that the city commission is looking at. Sometime ago when the subject came up I expressed my thoughts in a letter to the Editor and I still feel the same. Over the years it has been very rare that either the Federal, State, or City Government can run a private enterprise as well as the founders. We have a small number of local trash service firms that do a very good job. I realize that we have a problem with trash around houses and some using others containers to dump. We have a city ordinance that covers these matters and a Codes Enforcement officer already on staff to cover these matters. I have noticed that recently codes enforcement have been active in citing those residences on unsightly trash around the houses and yards, We should be able to correct what problems we have with the staff we have. Another thing we should think about before upsetting the apple cart is that the local services hire local people to work with them and spend money locally to keep their equipment repaired and spend many dollars a year locally on fuel to operate this equipment. We should not allow out of town firms to continue to take this money to their home towns. The Joplin firms that already are in competition with our locals have larger trucks that are maintained elsewhere. In conclusion we will be making another bad mistake if we once again try to destroy private enterprise.
