Do the math

Dear Editor:
Mr. Umbarger, in regards to the senators’ upcoming vote to repeal the 1994 law reinstating the death penalty and replacing it with life in prison without parole. Please do the math. You will have created a pyramid system that our grandchildren cannot pay for. If you send 20 murderers to prison for life each year for the next 40 years you will have 800 prisoners serving life sentences without the possibility of parole. I know a few will die, but many criminals in their twenties will live 60 years in prison. Keep in mind they will be receiving three good meals a day. They will be given at least one hour a day in the exercise room and they will receive the best medical care the state can provide. The cost of state medical insurance for the last 10 years of a prisoner’s life will be huge.
To help get senators to repeal the death sentence they are making the guidelines on aggravated murder the same as the present crime of capital murder. This will send more criminals to prison for life without parole. Also when a case goes to the jury to convict if they are not voting for death they will send more criminals to jail for life.
In 20 to 30 years we will have enough extra criminals in jail we will need to build an extra facility at a cost of 200 to 300 million dollars and spend another 20 to 30 million per year to operate. This is not a system that will work.
