With that state facing a budget crisis, State Rep. Julie Menghini has put forth an idea that may add to the state coffers and improve the local economy at the same time.
Menghini, D-Pittsburg, has proposed a gaming bill that would reduce the current restrictions that have made it difficult to bring gaming to the Southeast Gaming Zone — made up of Crawford and Cherokee counties.
The bill calls for reducing the minimum level of investment and the initial investment, and reducing the percentage of money casino owners would have to pay to the state from slot machine revenue. The bill also states that a lottery gaming facility manager can also serve as the racetrack manager, and condenses the review process for applications.
We believe that passage of this bill would go a long way toward enticing gaming facilities to open for business in southeast Kansas and would help level the playing field with northeast Oklahoma tribal casinos.
We encourage the legislature to pass this measure and applaud Menghini for her efforts to stimulate the economy — statewide and locally — in these tough times.
