GIRARD —

Dear Editor
A small historical Cemetery that sits on State Park Corner, the Shirly Cemetery. A place of burial that was started by the people who were traveling through the area in covered wagons and horseback. As they needed a place to bury their dead, this cemetery thru the years suffered the same neglect and abuse that is common for many of the older cemeteries. Our local A.A.R.P. chapter adopted it as a chapter project to restore it. We have cleaned it up, straightened the tombstones, placed a fence, installed a flagpole with light, a sign, and decorated grave sites with flowers. This project has the following to thank. Our local chapter for their work, the County for the mowing, the State for weed and brush control, a local cemetery for donating flowers, the people who donated the fence, and the American Legion for the flag.
It is now a place we all can be proud of. A place that the people buried there are surely more at rest knowing that someone cares.
